Ever heard the expression "starving artists?" That expression may be more relevant than one would realize. Granted there are many artists that do well and can live off their art. Then there are artists who have to work a day job(s) to pay the bills. There are artists who are well off and there are artists who live below the poverty line. Artists come from all walks of life, different ages, experience and more. I think this diversity one of the great things about the art world. My thoughts today are on the reality of being a professional artist. It can be hard and there are many road blocks along the road to success. A good example are outdoor art shows. Bad weather can ruin an art show that an artist was counting on to go well. The economy has affected retail sales everywhere and art is no exception.
The bottom line is that when you are doing what you love, there is no monetary value to that. All of the money in the world cannot buy happiness. That is why artists do what they do, even if it is hard. It can be a difficult life, but a life filled with the happiness and the enrichment of life experiences and friendships

- The Ozark mountains have always inspired me. Growing up, I seldom lived in one area for more than a few years. My desire is to make others aware of the incredible beauty and diversity of the Arkansas Ozarks. So many people go about their daily lives rushing blindly, not noticing the beauty around them. My grandparents lived in Fayetteville my whole life and I always looked forward to visiting them. Once I moved to Arkansas I spent a lot of time hiking the Ozark hills, observing and drawing nature. Over the years I drew over 200 native plants and animals, honing my skills at my favorite medium, colored pencil. In 2007 I received a B.S. in Biology from the University of Arkansas Fort Smith and my background in science has given me a greater understanding of the plants and animals I draw. My education has also benefited me when working on state and federal contracts. In 2005 I illustrated interpretive panels on native fish and grasses for the AR Forest Service and in 2007 I illustrated two panels on the Trail of Tears for AR State Parks. In 2008 I helped design and illustrated 9 panels for the Pineywoods Native Plant Center at Stephan F. Austin State University (Nacogdoches, TX).
